How Much Do Popular Destinations Really Cost (Tokyo)?

how much does it cost to travel to popular places Japan tokyo money plan trip budget solo female traveler American flight hotels

One of my main reasons for creating this website was to discuss how much it really cost to travel. Before I started traveling solo, I followed so many content creators. From bloggers to YouTubers, I was trying to soak up as much information as I could before I started traveling alone. One thing that I rarely came across was someone who stated exactly how much they spent on trips.

Some people may consider it tacky or distasteful. But, here on my website, I LOVE IT AND ENCOURAGE IT. I am a very transparent and honest person. No subject is taboo here and I don’t offend easily. We can discuss whatever. To be quite honest one of the most important factors of traveling is money and cost. So why the hell are people not talking about it! It’s like the elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring.

Another reason why I created this website was to inspire people to travel. Growing up I was never exposed to international, worldly type people. To this day I still know people who have never been on an airplane. I can only hope that a young adult can come across my website and see that it is possible to see the world. I come very humble beginnings, from a family who did not make a lot of money and did very little travel. But, I have been able to do it 100% on my own! No trust fund, no sex work and nothing illegal.

And one more thing before we get started. I’m a huge procrastinator and a little scattered brained. This post probably would have served better as an introductory post. If you go through other posts, you will see that I have included the cost for some of my activities in them. It wasn’t to brag or flex, it coincides with this post and how I expose what I pay for on my trips.

I haven’t kept up with all of my cost for all my trips. My latest trip was to Japan so I will detail it below. I plan on doing the same for all my trips going forward.

How Much I spent to Travel to Japan

  • Round-trip flight to Tokyo, Japan – Delta $883. I did main cabin, I could have saved $100 if I did basic economy but I wanted to choose my seat and get award miles so I paid the extra hundred.
  • I stayed in Japan for 11 days and 10 nights. I stayed in 8 different hotels (which wasn’t the best idea, I will write about it later)
    • Hyatt Regency Tokyo Bay $400 (2 nights total)
    • Millennial Capsule Hotel $161 per night
    • Courtyard Tokyo Ginza Hotel $201 per night
    • Hotel New Otani Tokyo Garden Tower $163 per night (Originally was $313 but got cash back with credit card promotion)
    • Moxy Kyoto $480 (2 nights total)
    • Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka (free used 6,5000 points)
    • Sheraton Miyako Hotel Osaka $141 per night
    • Sheraton Miyako Hotel Tokyo (free used a free night credit)
  • Bullet train to Kyoto Roundtrip $200
  • Taxi’s – approx 100 (It was raining or I was being lazy, public transportation there is very good and efficient)
  • Suica card for public transportation in Japan for 11 days – $30
  • Tours – Tea with Geisha $50. Sushi making class $65. Night food tasting tour $101. Team labs museum – $27. Cup of Noodles Museum- Free, Tokyo National Museum – $6.65
  • Food – I never really keep up with this cost because it’s just me. My most expensive meal was $105 and thats because I ordered Kobe and Waygu beef. I typically eat at the hotel for breakfast if it’s free. I did spend $25 each day at Hyatt Regency because the breakfast buffet was amazing. I often got snacks at 7 Eleven and from street vendors. Food in Japan is very cheap (no more than $10 for most meals). (not included in total because it can vary)
  • Shopping and souvenirs: $250 (not included in total because its optional/varies)

GRAND TOTAL: $2978.65

There you go! I spent a little over $3000 on my trip to Japan. Of course, I could have done it for way less, if I chose cheaper accommodations and stayed based in one city. I hope that this provides more insight on how much you should expect to spend if you travel to Japan.

I also wrote another post on how I’m able to find to cheap international flights, you can read about it here.

    1. I love your openness to cost! It’s the hardest part to plan when planning a trip! I hope you keep this up for every trip! You better not procrastinate or forget>:(
